Edison, New Jersey - Several local, statewide and national organizations including the Edison Wetlands Association, Sierra Club, the Raritan Baykeeper, and families along the Raritan River and around New Jersey are demanding that local, state, and federal elected officials support Senator Frank Lautenberg’s proposal to deal with toxic waste leaching from contaminated sites in New Jersey.

“After Sandy hit, EPA assessed the short-term removal sites in the Superfund program, finding they did not pose an immediate threat to public health or the environment,” said Senator Frank Lautenberg in a letter to EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck. Senator Lautenberg went on to say, “the Raritan Bay Slag Site, a Superfund site in Sayreville, includes a seawall and jetty that are contaminated with lead slag, a byproduct of metal smelting. This contamination has tainted the surrounding area with lead and other heavy metals that are potentially toxic to humans. At least one sample taken near the site following Superstorm Sandy has shown lead levels above the recreational limit.”

After Hurricane Irene devastated New Jersey in August 2011, the American Cyanamid Superfund Site in Bridgewater was deluged with approximately 300,000,000 gallons of toxic flood waters. Fortunately, Hurricane Sandy avoided a direct hit to this 400 acre regional toxic hotspot and the 27 chemical lagoons which are still filled with deadly poisons. However, Hurricane Sandy likely impacted thousands of unsecured and leaking toxic waste sites in New Jersey. Also not mentioned by the Senator, but equally a problem, are enormous contaminated groundwater plumes and sewage treatment plants throughout the state.

According to Scientific American, “Damage from Hurricane Sandy took several waste water treatment plants offline in New Jersey and raw sewage carrying high levels of bacteria, viruses, and chemical wastes emptied into waterways throughout our State. Scientists estimate millions of gallons of this toxic sewage were spewed into NJ’s Rivers, streams, and estuaries.”

The full scope of this persistent and massive problem was finally exposed after Hurricane Irene struck, but it has become even more apparent after Hurricane Sandy. Senator Lautenberg’s call for legislation deserves New Jersey’s full support but the scope of this disaster is even more severe than the Senator and public are aware. With New Jersey’s notorious industrial legacy, New Jersey has an estimated 30,000 unsecured leaking toxic waste sites with more being found almost daily.

On October 27th, a coalition of groups including EWA, Sierra Club, Raritan Baykeeper, and others, demanded that the EPA take emergency action to secure the millions of tons of chemicals within the 27 leaking waste lagoons at the American Cyanamid Superfund site in Bridgewater.

“Global climate change is happening in front of our eyes and the results are these severe weather events. Despite what those in denial may parrot, these freak superstorms are now commonplace in New Jersey,” said Robert Spiegel, Executive Director, Edison Wetlands Association. “We must mobilize state and federal resources to address these toxic assaults on New Jersey families and our shared environment.”

Never before have New Jersey residents had to deal with two major Hurricanes and a significant earthquake within a one year time span. We need to work with Senator Lautenberg and government at every level to protect New Jersey families and take whatever actions possible to mitigate toxic destruction caused by future severe weather. This is not a democrat or republican issue, the families that live in and around the Raritan Bay Superfund Site don’t care about politics they care about action.

“The state and the federal governments spend trillions of dollars of hard earned tax dollars on National Security,” said Robert Spiegel. ”We should be looking at this issue with the same seriousness.”

Lautenberg Announces Legislation to Protect Public Health Near Superfund Sites After Disasters Like Superstorm Sandy

Senator Also Calls for Additional Assessment of NJ Superfund Sites After Sandy

Lautenberg Press Office, 202-224-3224
Thursday, November 29, 2012

WASHINGTON, DC—At today’s Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee hearing on Superstorm Sandy, U.S. Senator Frank R. Lautenberg (D-NJ) announced that he will introduce legislation that would protect public health by allowing Congress to provide emergency funding to contain pollution at Superfund sites following a natural disaster like Sandy.

The “Superfund Emergency Response Act of 2012” also would require the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to conduct a study on the vulnerability of Superfund sites to extreme weather events and develop a plan to better protect these sites from future natural disasters.

“Flooding and high winds like we saw during Superstorm Sandy can damage Superfund sites and unleash toxic pollution into our air, water and communities. As extreme weather becomes more common, we must take steps to make sure Superfund sites do not present an even greater risk to public health after a storm or disaster,” said Lautenberg, Chairman of the EPW Subcommittee on Superfund, Toxics and Environmental Health, which has jurisdiction over the Superfund program.

In addition to the legislation announced at today’s hearing, Lautenberg released a letter to EPA Region 2 Administrator Judith Enck calling for an additional assessment of Superstorm Sandy’s impact on Superfund sites in New Jersey.

“Specifically, the Raritan Bay Slag Site, a Superfund site in Sayreville, includes a seawall and jetty that are contaminated with lead slag, a byproduct of metal smelting. This contamination has tainted the surrounding area with lead and other heavy metals that are potentially toxic to humans. At least one sample taken near the site following Superstorm Sandy has shown lead levels above the recreational limit. Since we share the goal of ensuring that no one in New Jersey is at risk from toxic pollution, I request an additional assessment of whether toxic contaminants leached from any Superfund sites into the surrounding environment,” Lautenberg wrote to Enck.

A copy of Lautenberg’s letter to Administrator Enck can be found here.

OLD BRIDGE, NJ – On Wednesday, Congressman Frank Pallone, Jr. (NJ-06) presented comments at a U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) meeting about its proposal to clean up lead contamination at the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund site in Old Bridge and Sayreville. Pallone has long prioritized the cleanup of this contaminated site so the local community may once again access the waterfront area without worry of health hazards. Lead is a toxic metal that can be particularly dangerous to children’s developmental health.

As a result of urging by Pallone, the Raritan Bay Slag site was placed on the Superfund National Priorities List in 2009. The EPA conducted an in-depth investigation of the contamination to determine how best to clean it up over the long term and determined the most effective course of action will be to remove contaminants from the site instead of landfilling the material.

(New York, N.Y.) The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency is proposing a plan to clean up lead contamination at the Raritan Bay Slag Superfund Site in Old Bridge and Sayreville, New Jersey. Lead is a toxic metal that is especially dangerous to children because their growing bodies can absorb more of it than adults. Even at low levels, lead in children can result in I.Q. deficiencies, reading and learning disabilities, reduced attention spans, hyperactivity and other behavioral problems.

The Raritan Bay Slag site consists of three sectors that contain lead slag, a byproduct of metal smelting. This lead slag was used to construct a seawall and a jetty along the southern shore of the Raritan Bay in Old Bridge and Sayreville. The first sector is the Laurence Harbor seawall, adjacent to the Old Bridge Waterfront Park in the Laurence Harbor section of Old Bridge Township. The second sector consists of the western jetty in Sayreville and extends from the Cheesequake Creek Inlet into Raritan Bay. The third sector is Margaret’s Creek and is approximately 50 acres and has elevated lead levels along with areas of slag and battery casings. The EPA proposed plan will address contamination in all three sectors.

Almost three decades into the Superfund cleanup of the old American Cyanamid plant along the Raritan River in Bridgewater, the latest plan for the heavily contaminated property has local business interests and environmentalists at odds.

The former want to implement a cleanup program — which will take another 10 years and $204 million — and move on. The latter fear that the plan will contribute to flooding and will not protect the state’s drinking water.

The site is located adjacent to the Raritan River and lies above the Brunswick Aquifer, New Jersey’s second-largest source of drinking water. Area residents are serviced by a public water supply that provides a safe source of water.

The plant, the scene of intensive chemical manufacturing during most of the 20th century, has been closed since 1999 because of air, water, and ground pollution. Over the years, environmental agencies have overseen the removal and treatment of an estimated 1.1 million cubic yards of material, but some of the biggest challenges remain.
